SUCCESS AND HEARTBREAK AT THE ADAC KART MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDER

The deciding edition of the German series proved to be a weekend that ended with both celebrations and some disappointment for the Schumacher Racing Team at Wackersdorf. After a most encouraging day Saturday, the luck of the racing and the weather came into play for some of the young drivers. We know – that’s racing!

In the OK class, the team’s new RS Kart made a clear statement and kept its promise, as series guest driver Nicklas Nielsen backed-up the double victories in the heats by leading race 1 from pole position. It was a fantastic demonstration of the RS Kart chassis by IPK while the team become accustomed to their new addition. Best results on the day saw Tim Tramnitz take P4 in the same race and SRT newcomer Titus Shanghai-Schmidli P4 in race 2, with Levi O’Dey P8 in the competitive senior full field.

Joel Mesch had a brilliant first race to finish third, but sadly lost his chance of becoming the ADAC OKJ champion when he was involved in a collision in lap one of the final race on a damp, slippery track that concluded the title story for 2018 by a mere three points. Teammate Jakob Bergmeister finished one place better in the morning race for juniors, but fell back in the afternoon battle for positions to P8. It was still a very satisfying result overall for the youngsters to be P2 and 3 in the points.

Fabio Rauer ended his ADAC Kart Academy season off on a high when he crossed the line second in the final race Sunday, having already been crowned the 2018 champion and leading rookie in the lead up to the last round. Finishing as vice champ to Fabio in both points standings, Piet Matthes took P2 in the opening race today, but a later penalty due to an unfortunate mistake before the grid in the last, ended what was almost the perfect weekend. Colin Boenighausen made it a series podium lockout for Schumacher Racing by chasing Fabio to the chequered flag in third place in race 2, after taking a credible fifth. Maximilian Boesing took P5 in the closing session, while Franz Baumheier narrowly missed the top 10 to finish P11.

Successful Debut for RS Kart with Nielsen and the Schumacher Racing Team on the podium at DKM final
The maiden meeting for the newly launched RS Kart sees the success story continue today, as Nicklas Nielsen came through the highly-competitive field in the senior OK class to be within metres of victory in the final race at Karting Genk. After taking pole position, a frustrating DNF from a puncture and then a qualifying race win at the final round of the DKM German Kart Championship Saturday, the Danish driver climbed five places in race 1 to start out of grid 11 for the last race. Showing the true potential of the RS Kart, he passed another nine drivers to be chasing down the leader as the flag came out. It was an excellent result on the debut of the new brand chassis for the Schumacher Racing Team and adds even more confidence to their preparation for the upcoming World Championships in Sweden.
In addition to the celebrations for the first ever podium of the “Red Baron” [as Nielsen calls it], Levi O´Day fought his way into the top 10 to finish P9 in both of Sunday’s races.Tim Tramnitz had a brilliant day though, coming from last in race 1 to make up 17 places and then stole another 10 to take P7 in the closing race. Teammate Jason Ferati also had a great afternoon to gain 17 positions collectively and narrowly miss out on being the fourth SRT member inside the first 10 in the DKM category.
A double DNF was a disappointing start with the team for Hungarian Zsombor Kovacs, but he’s already focused on the next outing now. Both Jakob Bergmeister in Juniors (DJKM) and Fabio Wagner in the KZ2 Cup class (DSKC) suffered similar bad luck, failing to finish one of their races, but made the most of the better weather conditions on track for some valuable testing in their new RS Kart.
